Many of you will know that last week Pat Robertson endorsed Rudy Giuliani for President of the United States. I remember the last person Pat Robertson endorsed for President. Unfortunately, that person was George W. Bush.
With the increased disatisfaction with Republicans and the religious right (which really isn't) I'm not sure that America is ready for another evangelical in the Oval Office. And lord knows we don't want the person Pat Robertson endorses. For crying out loud, the man is a multi-time presidential campaign loser himself, and is known for being the worst thing to come to the Christians since that other hate mongering twat who died a few months ago, Jerry Falwell.
I'm not really a republican supporter, as you may well have guessed, but I do enjoy politics and strategic planning. If I were Rudy Giuliani, and praise be to (insert diety here) I'm not, I would RUN, no walk, as fast as I could, away from Pat Robertson and his 700 Club members. I would NEVER accept and endorsement from an evangelical during a presidential race. This is one case where I would be willing to stand on my own two feet and fail on my own. Were I a conservative, in the era or error of George W. Bush, I would stand for election solely on my conservative beliefs and record in leadership, not on what evangelicals want me to pretend to be. Sorry, but I just couldn't allow myself to accept their endorsement because of the payout that would be expected by evangelicals.
While it may be imprudent to distance myself from the evangelical community, I would rather stand on my own and embrace a wider audience than the so-called "moral majority." Rudy has a reputation for being a mavrick when it comes to politics. He's a fiscal conservative with liberal social tendencies. He's sort of the modern day John McCain. Unfortunately, by accepting the endorsement of Pat Robertson and his followers, Rudy is setting himself up for a terrible let down when the Christian coalition comes knocking on the door of the White House asking for say, a bill to ban abortions (which Rudy supports). It puts him in conflict with the social liberal side he has based his career on. In my most humble opinion, it would be better for Rudy to say "Thanks, but no thanks."
Will he be beholden to the Christian evangelical community if he wins the race? Yes. Is America fed up with the religious (not-so) right interfering in politics? Yes. I think this is the death-nail for Rudy. If he gains the nomination from the Republican party we're going to have a woman as president. Thank God for that!
